Balayage

balayage Balayage

Remember Ashley? This is her new balayage look!

Balayage is an advanced coloring technique that emerged from Paris in the 1970′s and is French for “to sweep.”   Designed to create very natural-looking highlights that allow the hair to grow out without developing a noticeable and obvious root.  Many celebrities and models have their hair balayaged.  This technique is one of the hottest trends right now.

The thing that I adore about balayage is that it is so superior to conventional highlights for several reasons.  The first being that the color is a believable blonde.  Many foiling applications leave your hair brassy and orange and at the six to eight week mark you have to get into the salon to have them re-touched. My balayage techniques stays true to the true blonde after eight weeks, and I have discovered that you can wait two-and-a-half months or longer in between your appointments.  Now who doesn’t love that?

The technique of balayage involves taking the hair and painting it by hand in a sweeping motion from the base to the top of the hair with results that are divine and looks as if you’ve spent your summer in the French Riviera.  If you are desiring a more high fashion celebrity look with lower maintenance, I highly recommend this look for you!!

Top 6 Summer Hair Care Tips for 2011

IMG 05771 Top 6 Summer Hair Care Tips for 2011

Well, it’s finally starting to brighten and warm up here in Portland, and that means its time to mention some more simple but always important summer hair care tips.  It’s great to feel in the sun’s rays, and take in some vitamin D.  For years everyone has known how to care for one’s skin in the summer, but not everyone pays attention to their hair!  If you want beautiful hair all summer long, make sure to remember these hair care tips!

Tip 1- Condition More!

I already mentioned the importance of using a top quality UV protection leave-in conditioner, especially for those with colored hair. But it’s also important for those of us with natural hair.  Using a good moisturizing conditioner, like the Kevin Murphy’s Hydrate Me Rinse helps so much during the summer months. Once a week, or at the very minimum at least once this season, give yourself a good deep conditioning treatment.  It’s the best!

Tip 2: Shampoo Less!

Shampooing can be drying to your hair, so skip a few days in between shampoos to prevent your hair from losing its natural moisture.  On those shampoo-free days, try a dry shampoo, such as Kevin Murphy’s Fresh Hair to keep hair looking good.

Tip 3-Cut Back on Non-Natural Hair Products

Reduce or eliminate your use of  hair products (sprays, mousse, etc.) that contain alcohol, which is very drying to your hair. Try to find hair products, that are all-natural or contain no alcohol.

Tip 4- Protect Your Hair from the Sun

If you’re going out to the sun for a long period of time, aside from wearing a leave-in conditioner with UV protection, such as Kevin Murphy’s Luxury Leave In Rinse, make sure to bring a hat or scarf for your head for at least part of the time, especially if you have had your hair colored or highlighted.  Finding shade with occasional intervals of sun is best!

Tip 5-  Watch Out for Chlorine

Sometimes the pool is such a refreshing thing on a summer day. I love going to the rivers outside of Portland, but also it’s nice to lounge around in a pool that’s just the right temperature!  However, chlorine is extremely damaging on your hair. The best thing to do would be to wear a cap if you can find one stylish enough, or at the very least wet your hair first in the shower prior to entering the pool to prevent your hair from absorbing chlorine.  Make sure you use a good shampoo to remove the chlorine residue as soon as possible after swimming.

Tip 6- Trim regularly

Keep the ends of your hair trimmed during the summer to prevent breakage.  If you’re growing your hair out, at least follow the rest of these tips, especially keeping your hair well conditioned and free of moisture-robbing products!

Hello friends, meet Ashley, who is the shop girl at Frances May.  Ashley is one of those ladies who is such a unique individual.  She keeps you wondering with what her next artistic inspiration may be.  I always look forward in seeing her photography more and more!

She and I have been planning the date for me to do her hair for some time now, but you know how it is when we are all so busy… but, the time came indeed.  Ashely walked in looking so cute and down to earth sweet which I just love, but she like most girls want to sparkle just a little more.  So, I made her over in three short hours.  From already fabulous and glamorous… to hot and sensual blonde. Done and done.  Really that simple.  The photos show all.  Thanks Ashely for being such a great friend and the experience in watching yet another amazing woman transform before my eyes.  xoxo

MISSISSIPPI

showblog MISSISSIPPI

What a way to start off the week….  by hanging my first ever photography show with Morgan Reedy at the Fresh Pot Mississippi.  She has been one of my longest most insightful friends that holds many aspects of genius all around.  Our styles are very much different and yet very similar.  A paradox some would say.  I shot on Tmax 400 film with one of the oldest camera’s I own, yet constantly go back to.

My black and white images are double-exposed with the grave of one of the greatest painters of all time, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and multiple images around NYC (West village, LES and Coney Island).  Morgan has digital abstract filter diffused color prints that are just nude enough to transition you out of black and white, but yet not fully put you into the world of color.  We decided to pair them together to tell a story that is unwritten yet becoming.

I hope you all get to make it over to enjoy a cappuccino while checking out our show.,.. if there are any inquiries about prints please send me a text.

Xx

Birthday Bardot

IMG 0270 500x375 Birthday Bardot

So many things come into our lives… and how I just love it when someone as special as Melody comes into my life, only enhancing the daily art production.  She is a spring flower…. Happy birthday Melody.

There was a beautiful group of people celebrating with her on Saturday night.  She and I got manicures early that day… ran around the city looking for something to wear… We got the brightest manicures bringing in the Aries spring.  We headed back to the studio to prepare by opening a bottle of Pinot Grigio and Melody’s hair being rolled up in steam rollers, which we just love.  I gave her a classic roller set.  She came out with her dream hair… The Bardot look.

Were going bigger and YES this also means with hair.  Mel is going to be receiving many classic looks during the summer months and I am taking a more native approach of having completely straight hair.  We’re excited for the rain to end.. which means classic sets for those of you who want more glamor in your life.

Take yourself south bound to find us.  Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time ahead to pre-book your appointment; for appointments are going fast.

Sundown with curls up….. Happy Birthday Melody!!  xo, Kim

Summer Hair

summer hair Summer Hair

Yes, we all love summer and summer loves us, but when it comes to hair color, “hot” summery looks could be leaving your hair looking dull and frizzy.

First things first!  You must always protect your hair color in the summer months… How to do so: use a UV protection leave-in conditioner.  Apply and comb through with a large wide tooth comb.  Color conditioners are good for the minimizing of color fading along with home maintenance.  This is a very important thing to ask your colorist so you have the appropriate color conditioner.

Everyone also asks, “How can I prevent my hair from being dry during summer months?”  Well, the best thing is to address it prior to when it begins.  This comes back to home maintenance and regular hair trimming of the ends.

Deeper rich tones along with reds are much harder to maintain during the summer.  I always look to children’s hair as my inspriation in painting on just a few pieces here and there.

If you are wanting to shift your tone,  deepen your depth, or brighten up your blonde hair, please make an appointment sooner than later.  Time is limited and April is just about here. xoxo Kim

Razor Haircuts

razor haircut Razor Haircuts

Are you looking for texture and a modern look? Then look no further, because we have been cutting hair with the straight razor for a long time now. I took a straight razor workshop years ago at the house of Bumble and bumble NYC, and the versatility continues to inspire me. Bumble did a lot of research on this tool that was discovered to be the first implement of hair cutting/hair dressing.  The Bumble team also did additional research on Vidal Sassoon and the style and structure of his haircuts.  Bumble then took the structure of the Vidal cuts and added the straight razor technique into these timeless modern shapes, but now with an up-to-date texture.

Many clients come to me with a fear of razor cuts. Yes, I am sure everyone has had a bad razor cut. The reasons for this go on and on…but, I can quickly sum it up. A straight razor cut is entirely different than a guarded razor cut. A new razor needs to be used fresh for each cut. The degree in which the razor hits your hair–to restore the natural integrity of the hair’s cuticle–is the very key to the cut that will make your hairstyle come alive. With the education on how to use the proper hair products, razor cuts offer great versatility on a modern look that you can change with your style daily.

Wear a razor cut as your day shifts into night, with natural born style, creating a new modern movement.
